Student Assistant in the field Data Science and AI

(80 hours per month)

The Institute of Data Science, Research Group AI for Scholarly Communication, welcomes applications for the following position starting at the earliest possible date: Student Assistant in the field Data Science and AI (80 hours per month)

The position is limited until October 31, 2025 due to the project.

Your role

Your tasks will include supporting or assisting the following work:

  • Exploring publications related to LLMs, Agentic AI, and AGI research
  • Researching benchmark approaches, evaluating and applying their reproducibility
  • Developing Python-based scripts for generating matrix-based puzzles in ARC AGI challenge
  • Fine-tuning and evaluation of LLM performance on certain reasoning tasks

Who are we looking for?

The successful candidate must be enrolled at a German higher education institution in a degree programme relevant to the position.

In addition, we are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

  • Strong Python programming skills – This is absolutely essential. You should be comfortable writing efficient, clean, and modular code.
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning models – A solid base knowledge in working with ML architectures and specifically LLMs is absolutely necessary.
  • Base knowledge on large language models (LLMs) – Being familiar with basics of LLM and transformer structure is needed.

Ideally, you have the following additional skills:

  • Strong background in mathematics – Ideally, you should be comfortable understanding and applying mathematical formulas commonly used in AI and ML research.
  • Hands-on experience with fine-tuning and evaluation of LLMs – This would be advantageous and demonstrate readiness to contribute immediately to model development.
