The Advantage of Staying Coherent: Exploring Fundamental Physics with Laser Interferometry

The ALPS group at DESY, along with the help of its international collaborators, is currently trying to answer a number of open questions in fundamental physics by combining DESY’s existing particle accelerator infrastructure with techniques from laser interferometry. The most prominent example of this approach is the Any Light Particle Search II (ALPS II), which uses long-baseline, high-finesse optical cavities in conjunction with superconducting dipole magnets to explore the universe for axions. This unique infrastructure can also be used to investigate a range of other phenomena, including the vacuum magnetic birefringence effect, the existence of cold dark matter in our galactic halo, and high-frequency gravitational waves. In this talk, I will provide a brief introduction to the physics motivating this work and give an overview of ALPS II, with an emphasis on the role laser interferometry plays in the characterization and control of the experimental system. Finally, I will present the results from the ALPS II first science run and conclude with a discussion of several experiments related to these other topics.
