Competence-oriented, reflective and discursive: good teaching is an essential core task of the entire university, and something which is also designed and continuously developed in cooperation with the students. The aim is to qualify students so that they can contribute responsibly to overcoming social, ecological and economic challenges and help shape social coexistence at all levels. Here you can find out more about the principles and values that underpin teaching at LUH.

We have a strong educational mission and want to train our students to shape the future. That is why it is an important task for LUH to create diversity-sensitive teaching and learning spaces and to establish exchange formats in which reflective, interdisciplinary and collective dialogue on diversity takes place.
Prof. Dr. Julia Gillen, Vice President for Education

Our Focus

LUH encourages competence-oriented approaches in teaching. Constructive Alignment is a basic didactic principle for teaching design, while Challenge-Based Learning is a specific teaching approach that fosters project-oriented content derived from real societal challenges.

  • Constructive Alignment: Teaching and assessment in harmony

The "Constructive Alignment" concept provides for the harmonisation of teaching and learning objectives, teaching and learning activities, and assessment types. The basis for this is transparent teaching objectives, which point the way for teaching design and thus for the initiation of students' learning activities, the development of examination requirements and the forms of re-registration.

The following steps should be considered when planning a competence-oriented course:

    • Formulate competence-oriented learning objectives
    • Determine the students' learning activities
    • Plan the performance assessment
    • Check the fit between learning objectives, learning activities and assessment types (alignment) and make any necessary modifications

  • Challenge-Based Learning: Project-oriented teaching

Challenge-Based Learning allows students to develop practical solutions to real social challenges as part of courses. The didactic teaching approach thus combines scientific questions and methods with project and team work, promotes interdisciplinary perspectives and competencies and actively involves students with their existing skills and experience.

Further information on the design and possibilities of Challenge-Based Learning at LUH will follow shortly.
